Carnegie Art Center is a catalyst for cultural, economic and community development. A multi-disciplinary arts space, it challenges the community with exhibitions of contemporary art, engages children and adults with vibrant art and dance classes, develops professional workshops for artists and organizations, and supports regional cultural tourism efforts. It was originally built in 1904 as the City of North Tonawanda’s public library, funded by philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie.

The Carnegie Art Center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
Carnegie constructed 1,679 libraries in the United States; hundreds have been demolished. 277 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Carnegie’s Classical Revival building of brick and Indiana stone trim was placed on the Register 1995. It was an active library until 1975; in 1976 it became the art center. The Carnegie Art Center is raising funds to continue the restoration of the library to 21st century building and energy conservation standards, so that it remains a viable public space for the Buffalo Niagara community. Almost $225,000 has been raised toward restoration; total rehabilitation costs are $582,000 (Flynn Battaglia Architects, PC, 2004).
