The Carnegie Art Center provides a multi-disciplinary art education programming which includes creative movement and classical ballet classes as well as visual arts classes covering a variety of media such as drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media and printmaking.
SPRING 2008
Classical ballet instruction is for students ages 3-17 years. Classes are developed for kids with beginner to advanced dance skills and are taught by professional dancer/choreographer Bonnie Taylor on Tuesdays after school and early evening from January 8th through June 10th. Please see below for information on winter and spring breaks.
Fees for ballet classes range from $35-$70 per class for Carnegie members and $60-$95 per class for non-members. Class descriptions, times and fees are as follows:
Creative Movement Tuesdays, 3:45-4:15pm

Allows the very young child to explore fundamental dance concepts and to experience the joy of creative expression through movement. Class size limited to 8 students.
Pre-Ballet Tuesdays, 4:45-5:30pm
Student Ages: 5-7
Fee: $35 Family Members of Carnegie Art Center / $60 non-members
Presents the most basic elements of classical ballet to the child while at the same time encouraging his/her freedom of kinetic expression. Class size limited to 12 students.
Basic Ballet
Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30pm
Student Ages: 8+ or by permission of instructor

Begins a solid foundation in classical ballet with emphasis on proper alignment and execution of steps. A class for beginners up to third year students.
Elementary Ballet
Tuesdays, 6:30-7:30pm
Student Ages: 8+: 3 years previous training or by permission of instructor.
Fee: $70 Family Members of Carnegie Art Center / $95 non-members
Builds on and solidifies the technical foundation begun in Basic Ballet. Also addresses artistic quality of movement.
Intermediate Ballet
Tuesdays, 7:30-9pm
Instructor Permission only. For the dancer with considerable ballet background.
Fee: $70 Family Members of Carnegie Art Center / $95 non-members
For the dancer with considerable ballet background. A more extensive class format designed to increase strength, flexibility and artistry. Please speak to the instructor before enrolling in this class.
***Please note: winter break will take place the week of February 19th. Spring break will take place the weeks of April 8th and April 15th. There will be no classes on these dates. More information about a dance recital in June will be available from the instructor, Bonnie Taylor, after the semester gets underway.***
Visual Art instruction is designed to encourage imagination while teaching basic art concepts. Students are introduced to a variety of art materials in a relaxed classroom atmosphere. All activities are planned to develop skills and increase art knowledge in a fun and creative manner.

There are two classes per session. Each class is priced seperately. Each class runs for four consecutive days - from Tuesday through Friday - during the session.

Fundamentals of Drawing 10-11:30am

In this class students work on building basic drawing skills. We will study the use of line, shape, color, texture and form. By using pencil, markers and pastels the young artist will learn new skills while having fun! Introduction to Painting 12-1:30pm

Students in this class will explore different ways to use acrylic, tempra and watercolor paints. We will learn about color and composition by using a variety of painting techniques.
Mixed Media Creations 10-11:30am

This class introduces students to a variety of art materials and different ways to mix them up! Bring your imagination to the mix and create many whimsical artworks!
Paper Constructions 12-1:30pm
Instructor: Chris Truesdell
This is a class for students who like to create collage, paper constructions and cardboard creations. Join us and see what fun things you can make with a variety of papers, paint and glue.
Four Seasons of Art 10-11:30am

Join us as we take a look at the four seasons of the year and all the inspiration they offer. We will use paints, paper and other art supplies to create artwork using spring, summer, fall and winter as our theme.
Plastercraft Sculpture 12-1:30pm
Instructor: Chris Truesdell
Students will have fun in this class creating with cardboard, plastercraft, paints and paper. We will focus on construction skills while making animals, masks or whatever you can think of!
Printmaking and Painting 10-11:30am
Instructor: Chris Truesdell
This class will focus on building painting skills and introduce students to the basics of printmaking. We use foam printing plates, paints and ink to create original artworks.
Adventures in Drawing 12-1:30pm

TThis class is for students who would like to improve and build on their drawing skills. We will explore different ways to draw all of your favorite things with many types of drawing materials.
All workshops are for students ages 6-11 years old.

workshops are from 2-3 pm on specified weekdays.
July 9 - Printmaking Printmaking is a fun way to create original artworks! In this workshop we will learn printing techniques using printing plates, paint and paper.
July 10 - Creative Collage Collage is a way to create a new picture out of photographs. We will use beautiful wildlife photos to make original artwork.
July 16 - Let's Draw! Come and explore new ways to draw nature scenes, animals or even underwater pictures. You will enjoy learning new ways to draw some of your favorite things.
July 17 - Nature's Animal Sculptures Create an animal sculpture with imagination, sticks, rocks and other things nature provides. We will put it all together with glue to produce a one-of-a-kind creation.
July 23 - Cardboard Constructions In this sculpture workshop we will work on developing construction skills with cardboard pieces, tape, glue and paint. Join us to build a unique artwork all your own.
July 24 - Popping out Paper Wall Hanging Students will create a unique wall hanging with posterboard, markers, ribbons and more. Learn how to make a 3-D artwork that pops off the wall!
July 30 - Explore Mixed Media In this workshop we mix collage with markers, pencils and crayons. This is a fun way to make an artwork that is different than anything you've created before!
July 31 - Leaf Printmaking Summer leaves will provide us with the materials we need to create original artworks. We will combine acrylic and watercolor paints to make a summer inspired picture!
